Chammaanthu'rai Tamils, Muslims oppose land appropriation causing tension

Chammaanthu'rai Tamils, Muslims oppose land appropriation causing tension

[TamilNet, Friday, 08 June 2012, 23:48 GMT]
Tamils and Muslims at the Koarakkar village of Chammaanthu'rai in Ampaa'rai district of the Eastern province, oppose an appropriation of Tamil land for the construction of a mosque that causes tension between communities. 250 Tamil families of the village were displaced in 1990s after communal disturbances between Tamils and Muslims. When the families returned recently, they have found some of their lands appropriated for the construction of a police station. In addition, a land that had been earlier allotted for the construction of a cooperative society by the family of K. Tharmalingam, has been now appropriated for the construction of a mosque, despite the presence of two more mosques within 500 meters.

Both the Tamils and Muslims of the village in the pre-dominantly Muslim division of Chammaanthu'rai are worried about such activities causing disharmony.

Lack of a genuine arbitrating agency from the point of nation-building of the Tamil speaking people is the problem, the people said.

The late Mr. Tharmalingam allotted his private land when there was a need to build a cooperative society for the village.

The Tamil families of the village largely come from the washermen community.

The appropriation of lands for the police station has also affected many Tamil families from resettling.

US commander, Indian defence minister assure military aid to Gotabhaya in Singapore

US commander, Indian defence minister assure military aid to Gotabhaya in Singapore

The Chairman of the US Joint Chief of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, the top most US military commander and Indian Defence Minister A.K. Anthony met genocidal Sri Lanka’s war-crimes-accused Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa behind the screen in Singapore on Tuesday to assure him of their military assistance, especially in the naval field. The high profile meeting took place while Mahinda Rajapaksa was being hosted in London and the US ambassador-designate to Colombo was talking about ‘de-militarisation’ of the north in the island. Singapore Foreign Minister Shanmugam was in Colombo a few days earlier to talk ‘business’. Following the classic British colonial strategy, Sri Lanka, Burma and Singapore are mobilised to meet threats from the East, analysts said.

The Gotabhaya deal took place on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

Washington and New Delhi have agreed to provide enhanced training opportunities for the genocidal Sinhala Navy.

Grooming the Sinhala Navy is a pet project of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa for the permanent subjugation of the nation of Eezham Tamils and to counter any future assistance coming to it from the Tamil brethren across the straits in Tamil Nadu.

The genocidal Sinhala regimes have long been working on choking the coasts of Eezham Tamils. Currently the two-prong mission of the Colombo regime is to build naval bases all along the coasts of Eezham Tamils and to colonise their coasts by Sinhala fishermen.

The Sinhala Navy killing and intimidating the fishermen of Tamil Nadu is a decades-long story.

The Eezham Tamils and Tamils in Tamil Nadu have to be clear on the fact that ultimately it is New Delhi and Washington that permanently militarise and Sinhalicise the lands and waters of the Tamils.

It will be a folly if any one expects them to pursue war crimes of the Sinhala military or stop Sinhala militarisation, colonisation Buddhicisation and structural genocide of Eezham Tamils, unless the Tamils prove their geopolitical strength, analysts in Chennai said.

The Sri Lanka Foreign Ministry statement on the Gotabhaya deal said that the US and India commended the “incremental and steady progress” made in Sri Lanka’s north and east in rehabilitating the war displaced.

Press Trust of India (PTI) carried a story of Colombo on Tuesday that it has reduced 60 per cent of its troops from the Jaffna Peninsula – from 50,000 to 15,000.

Contrary to Colombo’s statement on drastic reduction of its military in the north, the Sinhala military personally supervised by Gotabhaya and encouraged by New Delhi and Washington, is expanding its bases in the north, especially in the Jaffna Peninsula. Media, civic bodies and civil officials have brought it out with evidence.

* * *

The British Queen hosting genocidal Rajapaksa was not an isolated event.

Prior to the visit of Rajapaksa, the Colombo government had extended an invitation to a group of Conservative members of the British parliament to visit the island’s North to see what it is doing there.

The invitation had been extended to British parliamentarians including Dr. Liam Fox, the discredited former UK defence minister and a known friend of the Sinhala state, after initiatives by Colombo’s professorial expert in wagging tongue, Rajiva Wijesinha, and SL Presidential Advisor Arun Tambimuttu, who comes from a long lineage of exploited Tamil culture.

The other British parliamentarians responded were David Amess, Guto Bebb, Nick de Bois, Alun Cairns, Alan Duncan, Sheryll Murray, Richard Ottaway, Andrew Turner and James Wharton, media reports from Colombo said.

The visiting British diplomats to Jaffna earlier were keen in seeing and assisting the occupying Sinhala military ‘rehabilitating’ the former Tamil militants.

Documents dating from days prior to the genocidal war would show how the British foreign office was pivotal in conceiving ‘militarized reconciliation’ as answer to the question of Eezham Tamils.

The British and international media that were silent when the genocide was taking place are now engaged in ‘exclusive phased release’ of the war crimes to occupy and deviate the world from the actual issue and from the real criminals. It is a world that does ‘business’ from everything. But the real criminals who criminalise States all over the world continue their games unabated and the pampering of the Sri Lankan state is one of the best of the examples.

* * *

After proving its capacity for genocide, the Sinhala military has now ‘graduated’ to get recognized as a potential major mercenary for the criminalised international system by the so-called international community as well as by India and China.

The British military strategy during the Second World War in protecting its Raj in India from the Japanese was heavily depending on Singapore, Burma and Ceylon.

After the fall of Singapore and Burma to the Japanese, Ceylon became the headquarters of the Southeast Asia Command of Mountbatten, who was directing the war from Kandy and Trincomalee. The war between 1942 and 1945 was fought from Ceylon mainly to open the Burma Road to China.

If the Chinese have replaced the Japanese today, once again Singapore, Sri Lanka and Burma are important to the successors of the British empire in the region – India and the USA.

* * *

The Norwegian peace facilitators coming out with identical models to Burma and Sri Lanka in asking the affected nations there to find reconciliation under the genocidal constitutions and military of those states, and the outfit of the West, the International Crisis Group (ICG) standing upside down in canvassing among Eezham Tamils to drop their claim for self-determination, have to be carefully understood in the historical perspective of imperialism.

If political consolidation and stability are the ones that are expected in these countries, that could be very well achieved by first recognising the right to self determination of the affected nations and then working for genuine reconciliation, both at country level as well as regional level.

For outfits that were able to orchestrate 30 odd countries to architect and end a war into genocide, it is not that difficult to smoothly bring in reconciliation after secession if they really wish it. But these outfits and crisis managers are destructive rather than constructive, and they don’t conceive anything beyond militarism.

* * *

In short, the Sinhala military – virtually a mercenary military for the ‘strategic partnership’ of India and the international community, conceived and architected by Robert Blake – is going to stay with its ever-expanding cantonments in the country of Eezham Tamils, feeding on them in every respect.

The ‘reconciliation’ they all talk is the militarized reconciliation, in other words, the Eezham Tamils reconciling to live with the Sinhala military and its Sinhalicisation.

So far no one has investigated who was behind awarding the Gucci Peace Award in Philippines to Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe, presiding over the militarisation and structural genocide.

One has to carefully note the catalogue of encouragements the Sinhala military was getting from the US and India, and the confidence with witch the Rajapaksa brothers operate, before being carried away by rhetoric such as the call for de-militarisation coming from the US ambassador-designate to Colombo.

The Sinhala military is precious and indispensable to India and the US, unless the Tamils politically prove otherwise.

Logically, the proving exercise has to be primarily addressed to New Delhi and only the Tamils of Tamil Nadu could do it.

* * *

Increasingly a credible suspicion falls on the establishment in New Delhi, whether the patronisation of the genocidal Sinhala military in the island is merely for larger geopolitical reasons or for internal reasons considering Tamils as worse enemies than the Sinhalese.

For several decades now, a set of diplomats particularly coming from the south of India and media persons from Cho Ramasamy to The Hindu Ram, as friends of Colombo, were steadily contributing to the current scenario.

The immediate neighbours will be the first to face the Domino Effect of criminalisation of State in the island.

The Tamil Nadu branch of the Marxist Communist Party of India (CPI-M) recently voiced for de-militarisation as a passing reference. As an all-India party it could have acted on it at a mass level, but perhaps the party doesn’t believe the de-militarisation could ever happen.

If comes to power, the BJP may turn out to be worse.

The signals have already come from Sushma Swaraj in twisting the aspirations of Eezham Tamils.

Speaking on 30 May on the future of India’s foreign policy at the Brookings Institution of the USA, the former Foreign Minister of India and BJP stalwart, Yashwant Sinha instilled a feeling in the audience that how for those who are sitting in New Delhi, China and Pakistan pervert everything else.

Even when the moderator Teresita Schaffer tried to put him on track with the other neighbouring countries he was vague especially with an important topic as such of Sri Lanka.

He said, muscle will be met with muscle regarding China, and it will be verification first and trust later with Pakistan, if the BJP comes to power. He wanted the US and the NATO to stay in Afghanistan until the country is militarily self-sufficient to meet the Taliban.

“In our world today, economic and military power has a direct bearing on the moral and the pragmatic stance of nations,” he observed.

The Sinhala diplomats have carefully comprehended the needs and they have already started acting on it to suit even when a regime change may take place in New Delhi.

100,000 Indian students study in the USA and the Indian diaspora in the USA numbers around 3 million, Sinha said.

Of course there were some of them in the audience to ask him what his party is doing to Hindus in Pakistan and to the Kashmiri Pandits displaced to other parts of India. But there was no one to ask him about the Tamils afflicted by an India-abetted genocide.

What the Tamil Nadu politics is going to do is of historic importance.

* * *

The post-war politicians of Eezham Tamils in the island and political claimants in the diaspora think that they are made for ‘negotiations’ only. Mediocre among them are carefully groomed because they only will suit the purposes of the establishments.

Leadership comes through struggle and through building the nation. If negotiation without having anything is politics then we could hire some international lawyers and keep relaxed as we earlier left the fighting to the LTTE.

Someone pointed out Akashi telling the example of the defeated Japanese compromising with the occupying US military and later prospering. Japan paranoid of its own atrocities committed in China for decades, and fearing the traditional enemy China more than the new enemy the USA, took that decision. Eezham Tamils did not fight for an empire or did not invade others to be paranoid of a struggle. They righteously struggle against genocide. Whom should we fear and with which military are we going to compromise?

We have to make it clear that the struggle of our small nation is not actually against the powers but against the erring forces in the establishments of the powers that criminalise States. In such a struggle even the peoples of the powers would join us, if the case were presented in a proper way to the masses. The Vietnam War was primarily won inside the USA. Our struggle has to be primarily won inside India.

Unfortunately we are yet to evolve a leadership that believes in the power of the people and in mobilising the masses. We have not even tried it with honesty before deciding mass politics is useless to the structure and nature of our people.

The events of this week showed how the masses were spontaneous and were prepared to tell what they think to the face of the former empire, but the leadership claimants were not.

A veteran Tamil activist asked why a section of Tamil media was intriguing against masses showing protest to the Queen dining with Rajapaksa. At the initial times of the post-Mu’l’livaaykkaal phase itself, when this section stood against popular re-mandate of the Vaddukkoaddai Resolution, the diaspora Tamils should have identified the shade of polity.

Sinhala militarisation expanded in Jaffna contrary to claims: Jaffna Paper

Sinhala militarisation expanded in Jaffna contrary to claims: Jaffna Paper

Contrary to news reports released by Colombo that it has drastically reduced the number of troops in the North, the occupying Sinhala military in Jaffna peninsula has been stepping up land grab for military purposes in recent days even outside of the so-called High Security Zone and former Forward Defence Lines in the Jaffna peninsula. Uthayan Tamil daily, published in Jaffna, on Thursday broke a front-page story that SL military has begun to appropriate 61 acres of land in the peninsula from the civic bodies and private owners in three divisions. After already grabbing thousands of acres of land, the genocidal SL military has now set afoot to appropriate 35 acres in Thellippazhai division, 24 acres in Jaffna division and 2 acres in Nalloor division of the peninsula.

Uthayan, 07 June 2012

The SL military Governor of North, Major General (retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, who was the former commander of the SLA in North has exerted pressure on District Secretariat officials last week to appropriate the designated lands, according to the paper. Tamil activists have blamed the former SLA commander for committing war crimes. Hundreds of people were extra-judicially abducted and allegedly slain by the SL military during the times when G.A. Chandrasiri was the commander of the SLA in Jaffna.

Apart from the already established military camps outside the HSZ and the former FDL areas, which are yet to be released to the public, this is the first time after the war, a large-scale land grab is being carried out by the SL military by officially appropriating the lands for military use through instructing the civic bodies to abide by the military instruction, civil officials in Jaffna told TamilNet.

Last year, the chairman of Kaarainakar Piratheasa Chapai (PS), V. Anaimukan, was threatened by the occupying SL Navy for the appropriation of lands from the civic body. Mr Anaimukan has admitted that he signed the documents after being threatened of his life.

The SL Navy has established its new bases in the appropriated lands in Kaarainakar.

This time, lands that are not owned by private persons and that come under the management of the civic bodies, are instructed by the military to be officially handed over for military purposes.

The lands that are owned by private persons are being appropriated through the SL Ministry of Land and Development. SL Defence Secratary and presidential sibling Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is dealing with the matter of the privately owned lands with the secretary of the land ministry in Colombo, informed civil sources in Jaffna said adding that the SL military was seeking to establish large cantonments in the lands that it had appropriated in the country of Eezham Tamils.

Permanent cantonments are to be set up in these places to facilitate Sinhalicisation through militarisation according to the genocidal blueprint of the LLRC recommendations that envisages assimilation of Tamil Nation by denying territory-based political solution and by introducing demographic destruction through colonisation and through the so-called ‘tri-lingual Sri Lanka policy’.

Tamil civil officials in the North cautioned the Tamil diaspora that it should not be carried away by the hoodwink of talking about ‘accountability, reconciliation and development’ by the liberal peace establishments. Only an approach that doesn't concede sovereignty and legitimate national rights of the Eezham Tamils could meet the prevailing situation, they said.

The SL military was also engaged in identifying lands for occupation in three more divisions, including Point-Pedro, Valikaamam North and Kaarainakar, they further said.

New US envoy to Colombo has Iraq, Lebanon experience

New US envoy to Colombo has Iraq, Lebanon experience

[TamilNet, Thursday, 07 June 2012, 20:50 GMT]
The US ambassador-designate to be sent to Colombo, Ms Michele Sison is currently assistant chief of mission for law enforcement and rule of law at the US embassy in Baghdad, AP reported Wednesday. Her earlier experiences include ambassadorial assignments in Lebanon and United Arab Emirates. Sison said the U.S. was looking for "near term progress" by Sri Lanka, particularly in setting a date for provincial elections in the country's north and demilitarization of former conflict zones.

Appearing before the US Senate prior to her appointment confirmation, Sison said, lack of investigation into the serious allegations of the violation of international human rights law in the island has slowed reconciliation. “One cannot have true reconciliation, without that accountability.”

AP cited Democrat Senator Robert Casey urging independent investigation into alleged war crimes and saying that the issue would not go away “until the world sees results.”

The issue would not go away until international justice come to the national question of the nation of Eezham Tamils and the nation’s collective human rights, responded Eezham Tamil political circles.

Canadian Tamils join protesting Queen hosting Rajapaksa

Canadian Tamils join protesting Queen hosting Rajapaksa

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 06 June 2012, 23:53 GMT]
Eezham Tamils in Canada protested the hosting of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the British Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations on Wednesday. The demonstration took place in front of the British Consulate-General in Toronto. The Queen of England is also the head of State and Queen of Canada. The protesters displayed placards calling SL President Mahinda Rajapakse as a war criminal and shouted slogans against the ongoing genocide against Eezham Tamils. They also condemned Sri Lanka's membership in the Commonwealth.

Protest in Canada

The invitation of the Sri Lankan President to such a historic celebration, amidst persistent allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity against him and the Sri Lankan armed forces is counterproductive to humanity, the protestors said.

The SL President's lunch with the Queen should have been cancelled by the Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma following the example of the cancellation of the SL President's key-note address at the Commonwealth Business Council, the protestors commented.

The leadership of the Commonwealth of Nations inviting the SL President is hypocritical against the backdrop of the UNHRC resolution in Geneva raising a question mark on the country's war crimes and human rights record, the protestors further told TamilNet.

The demonstration in Canada, the largest Commonwealth country having the largest Eezham Tamil diaspora, is a token protest extending support to the demonstrations by their kith and kin in London, the organisers said.

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 06 June 2012, 22:58 GMT]
"Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapakse should not have been allowed to attend the jubilee celebrations. The mistake of inviting him was not made by the Queen or the Buckingham Palace; the mistake was made by the Commonwealth in the last summit at Perth where they took no action against mounting evidence of human rights violations exposed by Channel-4 among others," the Chairman of the Royal Commonwealth Society, Peter Kellner, said, adding the "next Commonwealth summit expected to be held in Sri Lanka next year will be a disaster if there is no marked improvement in human rights situation in Sri Lanka. Sustained protests carried out by large numbers of Tamil expatriates marked Rajapakse's presence in UK, and fearing disruption to businesses in London his speech to the Commonwealth Business Council was cancelled Wednesday.

Interview with Channel-4
The European Union, the United Nations and many Rights organizations have said that there are on-going human rights violations and torture in Sri Lanka, said Kellner and added that the Commonwealth should use the leverage it has over Sri Lanka in holding the next summit [CHOGM - Commonwealth Heads of Goverment Meeting] to apply real pressure to force Colombo to put its house in order.

"Sri Lanka might fear losing the opportunity to hold the next summit, and be vulnerable to such pressure," Kellner said.

While admitting that other Commonwealth Nations may also be Rights violators, and that's why there is reluctance by the Commonwealth to impose sanctions on Sri Lanka, Kellner pointed out the glory days of the 70's and 80's when Commonwealth led the battle against apartheid South Africa as demonstration of Commonwealth's potential for leadership.

Peter Kellner
Peter Kellner
"Commonwealth should revive itself and stand up against human rights violators, and this is the perfect time with Sri Lanka holding the next summit to once again show that Commonwealth can regain its strength on human rights issues," Kellner said.

Meanwhile, Mr Cosgrove, Channel 4's head of diversity, was expelled from Sri Lanka shortly after he arrived, and his wife Shirani Sabaratnam was refused a visa and turned back from the Colombo airport.

Asked why the couple had been blacklisted, the immigration official said: "Because they are from Channel 4, which without reason has harmed Sri Lanka's reputation," BBC reported.

Chennai British mission insults protestors, say grassroot Tamil organisations

Chennai British mission insults protestors, say grassroot Tamil organisations

The Priyar Dravida Kazhakam (PDK), the striking and pioneer section of the Dravidian movement of Tamil Nadu, on Wednesday condemned the British mission in Chennai on Wednesday for not receiving in person the memo of the 19 mainstream political parties and grassroot organisations of Tamil Nadu protesting the hosting of Rajapaksa by the British Queen celebrating 60 years of coronation. The diplomatic mission, despite prior intimation of a memorandum to be submitted, made the demonstrators to put their memo into the mailbox at the gate of the mission. Tamils had a relationship with British imperialism since its initial years of formulating the Madras Presidency, a major constituent to today’s India. Kolathoor Mani of PDK on Wednesday asked whether the British government and the international community want Tamils to be anti-imperialistic in the current context.

When the British Deputy High Commission in Chennai (the former Madras of British Raj) has been informed in advance of the demonstration and submission of a memorandum, the response was that to give the memo to the watchman. But on Wednesday when 19 mainstream political parties and grassroot organisations gathered at the Deputy High Commission there was not even a watchman and the demonstrators were insulted to put the memo into the mailbox.

The demonstrators, including MDMK, VCK, CPI, TMMK and other mainstream political parties and grassroot organisations had informed the Deputy High Commission a day before, through e-mail and telephone, of their wish of an audience and petition, the organisers said.

But, “we were greeted with sheer indifference and insult from the part of the Deputy High Commission,” the organisers told TamilNet.

Whether the genocidal Sri Lanka of today has become more important to the British than their former presidency in South Asia from which they conquered the island in 1796, ask the Tamil Nadu activists.

During the genocidal war, even the diplomatic missions of New Delhi such as in Mauritius refused to receive memos from the global Tamil diaspora.

The larger question is whether the so-called international community and the establishment in New Delhi are driving the Tamils into an altogether different thinking, commented a veteran political analyst in Chennai.

The policies of Washington and New Delhi would ultimately make China to have the last laugh in South Asia, commented a veteran South Asian diplomat served in many of the countries in the region.

Meanwhile, the Chinese money directed through Colombo, is playing in many ways in India and among sections of Eezham Tamils in the island and in the diaspora, commented informed circles.

Following the line of the British imperialism during the Second World War, the island of Sri Lanka and Burma are considered important to counter any move coming from the East and unless the Tamils in the region prove their importance, imperialism would not listen, said a student of History.

Queen Elizabeth II, celebrating 60 years of her coronation, had to pass through thousands of Eezham Tamil protestors before lunching with Mahinda Rajapaksa, the President of genocidal Sri Lanka, and other heads of states at the Marlborough House in Central London, the headquarters of the Commonwealth. “Sri Lanka protest greets royal lunch guests,” said The Independent in its headlines. The Queen passed human rights protestors on her way and she was joined by more than 70 guests, including Prime Minister David Cameron and leaders across the association of nations, as they arrived to angry scenes. The chants of the demonstrators echoed around the forecourt as guests arrived, The Independent further said. Around 8,000 protestors were seen at the Marlborough House and earlier at the Mansion House, which was hired by Commonwealth Business Council (CBC) for Commonwealth Economic Forum.

The spontaneous protestors later gathered in front of Park Lane Hilton Hotel where Rajapaksa was staying.

While leaving the Hotel on Wednesday evening, Rajapaksa’s car had to face a rain of eggs coming from the angry protestors.

Earlier in the noon, he was welcomed with a big jeer from the crowd. His car arrived at the scene at Marlborough House bereft of the Lion Flag, for security reasons.

Mahinda Rajapaksa, hosted along with his wife by the Queen, is leaving for Rome to meet The Pope, news sources said. The Sinhala Catholic Archbishop in Colombo, Cardinal Malcom Ranjit is close to Rajapaksa and is a defender of his regime.

Rajapaksa was invited to deliver the keynote address of the Diamond Jubilee Commonwealth Economic Forum organised by the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC) on Wednesday. But in the last minute the CBC “after careful consideration,” cancelled his address and the session itself, fearing mass protests from Eezham Tamils in London.

Reporting on the cancellation on Wednesday, The Guardian said the tickets to the event were costing 795 pounds plus tax for each.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said it had agreed to guarantee the president's security but the CBC had "decided it was not in their interest to stage the event" because of the extent of the policing required and the likely disruption to the City of London, The Guardian reported.

The Guardian simplified the anger of Eezham Tamils in London as resulting from cases of torture and rape of Tamil asylum seekers forcefully returned to Colombo by the UK government and said that the UK government is coming under increasing pressure to revisit its policy about deportation.

But, contrary to what sections of articulating diaspora Tamils interested only in ‘negotiating’ and not leading a struggle say, the Eezham Tamils are angry at the continuation of the very State of British colonial legacy in the island and they are particularly angry with those who conduct business over genocide and criminalise States all over the world, political observers in London said.

The demonstrators in London burnt the Sri Lankan Constitution along with the effigy of Mahinda Rajapaksa in front of the Marlborough House.

The Queen ‘appeared to fleetingly shake hands’ with him in receiving guests at the reception, both The Independent and The Guardian reports said on Her Majesty receiving Rajapaksa.

The head of the Commonwealth of Nations has become a captive of the ‘international community of Establishments’, said old-generation Eezham Tamils, who recollected the scene of the Queen removing her gloves and shaking hands with her teacher, C. Suntheralingam, even when the then Prime Minister of Ceylon, Sir John Kotelawala, was waiting to receive her in the parliament house at Galle Face in Colombo in 1953.

Rajapaksa was seated on the table directly to the Queen's left with Babli Sharma, wife of the Commonwealth secretary general, Kamalesh Sharma; the Namibian president, Hifikepunye Pohamba, and his wife; and New Zealand' prime minister, John Key, and his wife, The Guardian said.

Gagged Tamils in Jaffna symbolically protest British unitary legacy

Gagged Tamils in Jaffna symbolically protest British unitary legacy

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 06 June 2012, 15:10 GMT]
Marking the day the diamond jubilee celebrating Queen of England dining with Mahinda Rajapaksa, the president of the genocidal State of Sri Lanka, Eezham Tamils gagged in the island chose to symbolically burn the unitary constitutions of British legacy in Ceylon, starting from 1833, and the republican constitutions of 1972 and 1978 of Sri Lanka, at a British colonial cemetery in Nalloor, the last capital of the Tamil Kingdom of Jaffna. A group of students arriving in vehicles symbolically laid the 7 unitary constitutions in the form of placards at the St. John’s cemetery in Jaffna, and after placing a wreath burnt them on Wednesday. As attack and intimidations by the occupying military have silenced the activities of the Jaffna University Students’ Union, another set of students outside of the university carried out the protest even under the gagged circumstances, sources in Jaffna said.

Constitution burning

Constitution burning
The constitutions that were symbolically burnt were the 1833 Colbrooke-Cameron constitution that for the first time brought in a unitary state in the island by joining the territories of the Eezham Tamils, Kandyan Sinhalese and the coastal Sinhalese, the 1910 Mc Callum constitution, the 1920 Manning constitution, the 1931 Donoughmore constitution that was implemented amidst boycott by Tamils, the 1945 Soulbury constitution that also became the constitution of independent Ceylon, the 1972 republican constitution of Sri Mao that proclaimed a Sinhala-Buddhist State and made Tamils to resolve for independence and the 1978 JR’s presidential constitution that made state genocidal to Eezham Tamils.

Student representatives anonymously told media that they wished to send the message to the international community and even under conditions of death threats, wished to extend support at least symbolically to their kith and kin spontaneously demonstrating in London and elsewhere against the insult added to injury by the British regime inviting genocidal Rajapaksa to dine with the Queen on a historic occasion.

The British colonial cemetery was chosen for the protest with full consciousness, they said, as now the so-called international community and India only wish to continue the British colonial legacy in protecting Colombo-centric, unitary, Sinhala state in the island.

The act of the youth is of great significance when legacy-continuing leadership of Eezham Tamils in the island, leadership claimants in the diaspora and main leaders in Tamil Nadu keep quiet or play stooges to the designs of the so-called international community and India, political observers in the island pointed out.

New Zealand Tamils protest Queen dining with genocidal Rajapaksa

New Zealand Tamils protest Queen dining with genocidal Rajapaksa

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 06 June 2012, 10:24 GMT]
Braving biting winter and incessant rains, Eezham Tamils in New Zealand staged a demonstration on Tuesday in the capital Wellington and in the commercial capital Auckland, protesting the diamond jubilee celebrating Queen Elizabeth II dining with Mahinda Rajapaksa, the genocidal President of Sri Lanka. Synchronized with protests in London, the demonstration on the other side of the former British Empire where the Sun was never setting gained significance, as the Queen of England is also still the Head of State and Queen of New Zealand. Speaking at the demonstration, Queen’s Service Medallist in New Zealand, Mr. A Thevarajan pointed out how the colonial British administration, which for the first time introduced unitary state formation in Ceylon, ignored historical sovereignty of Tamils and denied even federalism due to its sluggishness.

A delegation of Tamils headed by Siva Naguleswaran handed over a petition to the MPs and the Prime Minister at the Parliament in Wellington, expressing disapproval of allowing a war criminal to dine with Her Majesty the Queen on this historic occasion.

When the media asked why the protest, Mr. Ashok of Tamil Youth Organization (TYO), leading the demonstration said that apart from being Eezham Tamils, as New Zealanders and members of the Commonwealth they were angered by the diamond jubilee event allowing a war criminal to sit and dine with the great and beloved Queen.

Drenched and dripping in the heavy rains the Tamil youth stood demonstrating for two hours near Potters Park, a major cross junction in Auckland on Tuesday evening when people were getting back home after work. Despite the rains the demonstration made many of them to pause for a while and encourage the protestors.

Speaking at the event when the rains ceased for a while, Mr. Thevarajan citing the first ever unitary arrangement for Ceylon that came through the Colbrooke-Cameron reform of 1833 unifying territories of the Eezham Tamils, Kandyan Sinhalese and coastal Sinhalese in the island, said the basic clause in the arrangement, i.e., one people not denying the right of the other, passed into all the subsequent colonial reforms as a Royal Instruction.

But included as Section 29 of the Soulbury constitution, the original concept became totally effect-less in practice and even the Privy Council could not do anything on the Sinhala Only Act. The moves initiated during the British rule for a federal set-up were shelved due to sluggishness of the British governors, Thevarajan said, pointing to the responsibility of the British and the international community.

In the current militarised situation in the island, in which the military is exclusively Sinhalese and orientated with a genocidal mind-set, even a federal solution would not work now. The international community and India should not continue the fundamental mistake of British colonialism. Sections of Eezham Tamil leadership should stop giving ideas to the international community or vice versa about experimenting with federal solution or about promoting ‘Sri Lankan Tamil’ identity, Eezham Tamil political activists in the island commented.

Paramilitary groups deployed to grab coastal lands in Ampaa'rai

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 05 June 2012, 22:06 GMT]
The occupying Sri Lanka Army has deployed paramilitary groups to grab lands that belong to Tamils along the coastal belt of Ampaa'rai. The lands seized from Tamil owners are later sold to settlers and businessmen from the South by the SL military. The paramilitary operatives, who interfere in land issues, have also been used by politicians to appropriate public lands. Latest reports from Kaaraitheevu division say that a Tamil politician, with the backing of paramilitary, now claims the ownership of a plot of land allocated for the construction of a children park in the beach of Kaaraitheevu village that comes under the Kaaraitheivu DS division in Ampaa'rai district.

An official attached to the divisional secretariat said that a former chairman of the local civic body was attempting to appropriate the plot of land for his own purpose with the backing of paramilitary operatives.

After the 2004 tsunami, the people who lived within the distance of hundred meters from the sea were ordered to relocate themselves through a special directive of the SL State.

The SL military has now deployed the paramilitary groups to sell these lands to others, the DS official further said adding that the local politicians and civil servants who are used by the military to grab lands for Sinhalicisation are provided with minor favours.

The plot of land that has been earmarked by the Kaaraitheevu DS office for the construction of a children park at a cost of nine hundred thousand rupees under the North East Local Services Improvement Project (NELSIP) project.

Preliminary work of the park project was completed three months ago.

Rajapaksa visit to Queen’s jubilee evokes spontaneous responses

Diamond Jubilee celebrating Queen of England hosting genocide-accused Sinhala President Mahinda Rajapaksa evokes spontaneous responses from the leadershipless Eezham Tamils all over the world. The responses emanating from dormant anger are actually addressed to the so-called international community and more than that, are directed against the mediocre claimants for leadership among Eezham Tamils who would not dare to take a step without getting ‘signals’ from the masters in the IC, commented a veteran Tamil political observer in London. Commenting further on the Sinhalese in London welcoming Rajapaksa, he said the Tamils have no qualms about it. The Sinhala nation has every right to seek recognition and it should articulate in every possible way. Our problem is the adamant refusal of the IC and India to see that there are two nations in the island, he said.

Several hundreds of Eezham Tamils in London spontaneously gathered at the Terminal 4 of the Heathrow Airport on Sunday evening, holding placards and demanding the UK government not to allow entry to genocide-accused Rajapaksa in London.

The Scotland Yard allegedly leaked news that Rajapaksa would be arriving on Sunday night by a Sri Lankan Airways flight, deliberately to mislead the demonstrators, where as he arrived at London only on Monday morning, Tamil activists sources in UK told TamilNet.

On Monday noon several hundreds of Eezham Tamils belonging to various organisations, and especially the second generation youth, gathered outside the Park Lane Hilton hotel in London, where Rajapaksa was staying and demonstrated for nearly six hours. The demonstrators accused Rajapaksa of genocide and urged the British government to arrest him.

A group of Sinhalese have also arrived on coaches to exhibit their support to the Sri Lankan president, demonstrating with Sri Lankan flags opposite the Eezham Tamils.

A series of protests have been planned throughout Rajapaksa’s programme at London, especially against his special address at the Commonwealth Economic Forum organized by the Commonwealth Business Council at Mansion House on Wednesday, 6th June and an official lunch at the Commonwealth Secretariat at Marlborough House on the same day.

UK Protest
Rajapaksa being whisked away from the hotel, amidst demonstrations

A few months back, before passing resolution on Sri Lanka at the Geneva UNHRC, some US officials meeting civil society in Jaffna told its members that there was no likelihood of war crimes investigations, as enough pressure has not come from the affected people.

The affected people in the island are gagged. In the free diaspora, claimants for leadership afraid of raising any voice against the erring international community, are sitting on any democratic struggle of the masses, even when the people are prepared. Tamils should not make the IC angry is their song. They wait for ‘signals’ to come from the IC to take even a small move. After diffusing tension by passing a resolution in the State Assembly the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is keeping quiet. From where on earth the pressure would come when the forces that seek pressure and sit on pressure are the same, asked the political observer in London.

Mahinda Rajapaksa will be welcomed everywhere and he will be needed by everyone as recognition to State criminality is a globally on-going trend taking place behind the back of the masses. One has to take a special note that he will be addressing the Commonwealth Economic Forum organized by Commonwealth Business Council, the observer pointed out.

“Not only from the USA, UK and EU to India, China and Russia that find him useful; but also from Vietnam for which Eezham Tamils wrote on the walls in 1960s to the Tamil foreign minister of Singapore, want to do business with him. Rajapaksa has become a symbol and inspiration for the new world order based on global criminalisation of State. Unless the alternative world of peoples shows its collective strength nothing would happen.

“By spontaneously staging an uprising Eezham Tamils could at least get rid of mediocrity and evolve a suitable leadership needed for them by the times. In the late 1980s we have seen how dangerous a leadership could be when it is ‘installed’ from the outside. If we do not prepare our leadership properly, we will once again get into such a situation. Mediocrity will always take politics away from people.

“The queen’s jubilee attended by Rajapaksa is an occasion for global Tamils and Tamils in the Commonwealth to show their solidarity in passing the message to the so-called international community and a Commonwealth that didn’t act on the question of Eezham Tamils. The queen is head of state not only in the UK but also in Canada, Australia and New Zealand,” the veteran political observer in London pointed out.
