Eezham Tamils foster mutual understanding with Tamil-speaking Muslims

Eezham Tamils, who are confronting a protracted structural genocide against their nation after facing the massive genocidal onslaught in 2009, have called for stronger ties with Tamil-speaking Muslims. The Ezham Tamils, who have been facing the anti-Tamil pogroms, massacres, bombardments for several decades and finally the genocidal onslaught on Vanni in 2009, have a deep understanding on the situation of the Tamil-speaking Muslims, who are now being targeted by the exclusivist Sinhala Buddhists and their unitary State of genocidal Sri Lanka, the Tamil political leaders and academics who have taken part in the demonstrations against the anti-Muslim pogroms said.
When the Eezham Tamils were powerfully mobilised to defend themselves, the counter-insurgency project of the SL State was successful in creating and sustaining conflicts between the Muslims and the non-Muslim Tamil-speaking people in the North and East of the island. Certain external forces were particular in encouraging the divide between Tamils the Muslims. But, now the Muslim people have begun to identify their so-called leaders, who have been serving the genocidal agenda of the SL State, Muslim students at Jaffna University said.
Jaffna University Student Union, University Teachers Union and the union of non-academic staff jointly organised a protest on 19th June expressing solidarity with the Muslim students at the University. Students rallied in large numbers from across the faculties and staged a condemnation meeting at the main entry of the University.
Following the mobilisation by the students, a section of the Sinhala military intelligence responded with a ‘crude oil attack’ on the prayer hall of Muslim students at the University, angering the Muslim students, who have now started to perceive the SL military as an occupying force.
On the following day, the Tamil National Peoples Front (TNPF) organised a demonstration with the participation of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), Democratic Peoples Front (DPF) and New-Democratic Marxist-Leninist Party (NDMLP) at the central bus stand in Jaffna city.
Time has come for Tamil-speaking Muslims and Eezham Tamils to join hands in the struggle against the genocidal State, Mr MK Shivajilingam, who addressed the participants at the demonstration said.
In the meantime, the Sri Lankan Police was suppressing the protests organised by Eezham Tamils in Mullaiththeevu, Ki’linochchi and Vavuniyaa. The occupying military was asking the organisers why they were keen in protesting against the anti-Muslim pogroms in the South when the Muslims themselves were still observing silence in the North.
After observing the tendency, the Muslim residents in Ki’linochchi, Vavuniyaa and Mullaiththeevu organised protests after the prayers on Friday last week. Muslim-owned shops were shut down. The SL military was seen harassing the business owners who were taking part in the shut down.
The Kamal mosque in Jaffna town also suffered a minor attack. The attackers who had planned to set fire narrowly escaped from the Muslim residents who were quick to protect the mosque in the early hours of Saturday. The occupying SL military was present at the site when the military intelligence squad entered the mosque, Muslim leaders in Jaffna said.
SL military intelligence operatives were later seen putting up posters in the the Muslim-owned shops that remained closed. The posters blamed that the ‘communal riots’ were caused by ‘diaspora elements,’ which were seeking to divide the island by creating ‘religious disharmony’. However, people were quick to identify those who were behind the posters, news sources in Jaffna said.
While the Eezham Tamils were expressing solidarity with the Muslims, the Muslims in the South who have been reluctant to publicly identify themselves as Tamil-speaking, were now open about their mother tongue, an elected councillor from the Northern Provincial Council who went and met the affected Muslims of Aluthgama told reporters in Jaffna.
