TNA loses civic council to UPFA

Four members of Pachchilaip-pa'l'li civic council, elected on TULF ticket, have defected to the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) of genocidal Sri Lanka on Wednesday, a day after TNA's Parliamentary Group leader R. Sampanthan urged Tamils to vote for the common opposition candidate in the South. In the meantime, the occupying SL military intelligence officers, who are loyal to SL president Mahinda Rajapaksa and UPFA politicians are trying to woo the support of leading TNA civic members in other civic councils in North by paying large sums of money to them, news sources in Jaffna told TamilNet.

The TNA hierarchy, which has taken side in the presidential race between two candidates of the South, has exposed the grassroots of the TNA in the North to the dealings of genocidal state in Colombo, political observers in Jaffna commented.

Sri Lanka's ruling UPFA and SL military commanders in Jaffna are negotiating with five TNA councillors in the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) to back the presidency of Mahinda Rajapaksa, informed media sources said.

The UPFA is trying to buy over the TNA civic members providing 80 to 100 million rupees per head, the sources further said. An NPC councillor has been offered with 150 million rupees.

Already, a TNA civic member of Point Pedro Urban Council and two members of Point Pedro Piratheasa Chapai had defected to UPFA. A husband and wife, who defected to the UPFA. They justified their decision to media stating that they had secured 10 million rupees to be spent for the welfare of the people in their constituency from the SL military governor in North.

The four civic members who crossed over to the UPFA had been elected through Anandasangaree's TULF after ITAK's own nominations were rejected during the civic elections.
